OUR FARM...
We are a small family owned/operated farm located on the western edge of Chester County, Pa. As of Spring 2015 we own 13 dairy cows, roughly two hundred laying hens, several beef steers and hogs, plus we raise and process about 3000 broilers a year. The farm is all in grass (roughly 25 acres) and we seek to raise our livestock as naturally as possible. There is a growing demand for clean, nutritious, farm fresh foods as more and more consumers seek a link to their food sources and the farmers that grow it. In the last five or six decades the majority of Americans have become disconnected from the production of their food while corporate interests took the lion's share of it. As a result the quality of food has drastically declined. We believe theres a better way.
OUR GOAL...
Our mission statement: At Freedom Acres we strive to produce natural, wholesome foods in a manner that enhances the quality of soil and environment, honors God, and respects creation. Our aspiration is to produce foods that are of superior quality and affordable. We know methods of production have a direct impact on the nutritional value and palatibility of food, and feel there is no excuse for food production at the expense of our natural resources. We believe food quality is attained in the following order: Proper land/livestock management = Healthy soils = Healthy animals = Nutrient-dense foods = Healthy people.
OUR CATTLE...
Our dairy cows are all purebred Jerseys, the highest butterfat producing dairy breed. We practice rotational grazing which is essentially moving the cows daily from one section of pasture to another and mimics the natural migration habits of wild herbivore herds the world over. This cycle of grazing/pruning and resting/regrowing creates healthy soils, healthy cattle and interrupts any parasite or fly cycles.
Our beef is produced on grass both from Jersey steers raised from our dairy herd and from all-grass beef steers we purchase and fatten on our pastures. All our cattle are 100% grassfed, (nature's food for herbivores) plus have free-choice access to salt and mineral supplements. No chemical dewormers or parasiticides, no synthetic hormones, and no grain ever.
OUR POULTRY…
We house our laying hens in a portable “Eggmobile” and allow them to free-range on the pastures the cattle just grazed. We move them to a new location at least every three days to provide fresh forage and for predator protection. Besides free-choice grass, they have access to a mixture of GMO-free grains. Fresh air, sunshine, plenty of room to stretch their wings, and lots of green grass.
Our turkeys and broilers (meat chickens) are raised on pasture in portable floorless schooners that are moved daily. This not only gives them a fresh salad bar and clean linens, it also fertilizes the pasture, provides protection from predators, amd allows them to consume lots of grass along with their grain ration, which makes for extremely healthy birds. No synthetic growth hormones, no drugs or antibiotics, and no genetically modified grain. Finally, they are processed in our on-farm processing building using hands-on methods which make for a much cleaner environment than the machinery oriented commercial slaughterhouse, thus eliminating the need for irradiation or multiple chlorine baths commonly used in commercial processing plants.
OUR NAME…
To quote the Thorndike dictionary, Freedom, is “the state or condition of being free” or in another definition “exemption or release from unfavorable or undesirable conditions”. Both definitions describe what we implement on our farm. We strive to keep our animals in as nearly a natural state and habitat as possible. Cattle self-harvesting their own forage in the field, chickens on pasture, which encourages their “scratch in the dirt” instincts, and as a whole, encouraging natural biological expression in both livestock and land, unhindered by artificial props.
OUR POLICY…
If ever a customer buys product that is unacceptable at the time of purchase we will either replace it or refund the purchase price in full. We also have an open door policy throughout the farm. There are no trade secrets. Our farm is your farm and we are more than glad to show you around.
